Chapter Eight
Jack
Iâm squeezing the steering wheel and trying to only focus on my breathing as I drive down Main Street. Iâm keeping my eyes straight ahead and not on the sexy-as-hell, slightly tipsy girl in my passenger seat whoâs staring at me with those glossy, aroused-filled eyes. Her hair has come down in a bit of a mess, but the tousled look is just turning me on even more.
And that mouth⦠those lips⦠fuck. Theyâre the color of cherries, but they look even sweeter.
You canât, I remind myself. Sheâs off-limits.
âImagine we were the same age,â she says in that sweet voice that makes the tiny hairs on the back of my neck rise. âDo you think weâd, you knowâ¦â
I look at her and she smiles shyly.
ââ¦be interested in each other?â
I swallow hard as I turn back to the road, not knowing what to say. I donât care what age she is. Between eighteen and a hundred, Iâd be interested in this goddess.
How could I not be? Sheâs perfect in every way.
This day has been the best one in memory. Itâs the first day without a looming sense of doom hovering over my head. I was cloaked in darkness and sheâs a new light shining in.
âBut weâre not the same age,â I whisper. âIâm old enough to be your dad.â
âItâs called imagination, Jack,â she says with a playful grin. âPick a number in the middle. Imagine we were both thirty-seven years old.â
I was in Afghanistan hunting down high-ranking members of the Taliban when I was thirty-seven. I push that away and picture myself with an older version of Ruby.
âOkay.â
âNow, imagine youâre hanging out in a coffee shop,â she says, painting the mental picture. âItâs raining and you have an hour to kill, probably reading the paper or an old paperback book. The little bell over the door rings and I walk in, shaking my umbrella. What would you think?â
âIâd think that you shouldnât shake an umbrella inside because youâre going to make the floor dangerously slippery for the next person who walks in.â
She hits my arm playfully. âCome on, play along!â she says with a laugh. âWhat would you think about me?â
âHonestly?â
âHonestly.â
I take a deep breath as I turn onto a dark road with no cars around. âIâd think that you were the most stunning woman Iâve ever seen. Iâd think that I was dreaming. That I had died without knowing it and woke up in heaven.â
âWould you be upset if I sat at your table and talked to you?â
âNo. Iâd be hoping you would.â
She smiles as she watches me. Sheâs turned in her seat now, her back against the door, those aroused-filled eyes locked on me. What the hell is she doing? Why is she making this so hard?
âWhat if we had a wonderful time?â she continues. âWould you ask for my number?â
âEvery time with you would be wonderful.â
âBut would you ask for my number?â
âNo.â
Her mouth drops open with a playful scorned look on her face. She makes a scoff.
